Carbidopa, Levodopa falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the gist with Thuja and your carbidopa/levodopa (Sinemet). Concentrated Thuja products can carry thujone, a compound that's hard on the nervous system and can make the brain a little more prone to seizures. Some Parkinson's treatments, including levodopa-based ones, are thought to slightly lower the seizure threshold too, so the worry is that pairing them might add up and raise seizure risk.

I'll be straight with you though: this concern is theoretical and rests on weak, anecdotal evidence, not strong studies. Still, because thujone can be genuinely toxic, the cautious move is to steer clear of Thuja supplements. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before trying any Thuja product alongside your medication.

What Is Levodopa and Carbidopa Used For?

Brand names: Sinemet CR, Sinemet, Rytary, Dhivy

Levodopa and carbidopa is used to treat Parkinson's disease, post-encephalitic parkinsonism (parkinsonism that develops after a brain infection), and symptomatic parkinsonism that can follow carbon monoxide or manganese poisoning. These indications are shared across the oral tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, extended-release tablet, and extended-release capsule formulations (including Sinemet, Rytary, Crexont, and generic products).

DUOPA — a carbidopa/levodopa suspension given through a tube directly into the small intestine — is specifically indicated for the treatment of motor fluctuations in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. This is a product-specific indication and does not apply to the oral forms.
