Citalopram falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja products can contains significant amounts of thujone, a neurotoxin. Theoretically, patients taking drugs that lower the seizure threshold might be at greater risk of seizure if they also take thuja. Advise patients taking these drugs to avoid thuja products. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the concern with pairing thuja and citalopram (Celexa). Concentrated thuja products, especially the oil, contain a compound called thujone, which can irritate the brain and, in larger amounts, may make seizures more likely. Citalopram is an antidepressant that, like many in its class, can slightly lower the threshold at which a seizure happens. Stack the two together and you could, in theory, nudge that risk a little higher.

I'll be honest with you: this is based on anecdotal reasoning, not strong human studies, and a seizure on citalopram alone is uncommon. Still, since thujone is a real neurotoxin, the safest move is to skip concentrated thuja supplements and oil. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before trying any thuja product.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
