Here's the concern with pairing Thuja and your felbamate. Thuja products can contain a compound called thujone, which in higher amounts may make the brain a little more prone to seizure activity. In other words, it could nudge things in the opposite direction from what felbamate is working hard to do, which is calm down that abnormal electrical activity. The worry is that this might make your felbamate work a bit less reliably, and you could notice breakthrough seizures.

I'll be honest with you though: this is based on theory and scattered reports, not solid studies, so it's more of a 'why take the chance' situation. Since felbamate is reserved for tough-to-control seizures, I'd skip concentrated Thuja oil and check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any Thuja product.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
