Sodium valproate falls under ANTICONVULSANTS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Here's the concern with combining Thuja and your sodium valproate (Epilim). Thuja products, especially the oil, can contain a compound called thujone. In larger amounts thujone is thought to make the brain a little more prone to seizures, which is the exact opposite of what valproate is working to prevent. The worry is that this could chip away at how well your medicine controls your seizures.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical and based on anecdotes, not solid studies, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Still, with a seizure medication I'd rather play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any Thuja product, and never stop or change your valproate on your own.

What is Thuja?

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
