Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Busulfan
Busulfan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Thunder God Vine interacts with.
In vitro research shows that triptolide, a constituent of thunder god vine, inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes in human microsomes. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this pairing. Busulfan is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not in people) suggest that triptolide, one of the active compounds in Thunder God Vine, can slow down that enzyme. If it did the same thing in your body, Busulfan could clear more slowly and build up to higher levels than intended.
Why that matters: Busulfan is a potent chemotherapy drug with a narrow safety window. Higher levels can mean worse side effects like very low blood counts, mouth sores, nausea, and, at high exposures, liver and lung problems. This is only a theoretical concern so far and hasn't been reported in real patients, but please don't combine these without telling your oncology team first.
