Why this applies to Modafinil

Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Thunder God Vine interacts with.

Theoretically, thunder god vine might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that triptolide, a constituent of thunder god vine, inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes in human microsomes. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with these two. Your body clears modafinil partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest that triptolide, one of the active compounds in Thunder God Vine, may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, modafinil could clear a bit more slowly and build up, which might make its effects (and side effects) stronger.

For modafinil, that could mean more headache, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, a racing heart, or a rise in blood pressure. I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, and it hasn't actually been reported in people. Still, since Thunder God Vine can be toxic on its own, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
