Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here's the gist with prazosin and a thyroid extract supplement: this is really an absorption issue that runs in the other direction. Taking prazosin (or really any oral pill or food) too close to your thyroid product can keep your body from soaking up the thyroid hormone properly. The fix is mostly about timing, not avoiding either one.

To keep things simple, take your thyroid product on an empty stomach and separate it from prazosin by a couple of hours when you can. This is a minor, well-documented interaction. One side note worth mentioning: if your thyroid levels swing, your blood pressure can drift too, so watch for dizziness or lightheadedness with prazosin. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing any timing or doses.

What Is Prazosin Used For?

Prazosin hydrochloride capsules are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medications, such as diuretics (water pills) or beta-blockers.
