Thiotepa falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the interaction actually runs the other way from what you might expect. The concern on file is about other things blocking the absorption of the thyroid hormones in your extract, not thyroid extract changing how thiotepa works. Thiotepa (Thioplex, Tepadina) is given as an injection or instilled directly, usually in a hospital or infusion setting, so it does not depend on stomach absorption the way an oral thyroid pill does.

Because of that, I would not expect thyroid extract to meaningfully change thiotepa or its effects. The bigger picture is that self-dosing thyroid extract while you are being treated for cancer is risky on its own. Please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them so your thyroid is managed safely and correctly.

About Thiotepa Injection

What Is Thiotepa Injection Used For?

Brand names: Thioplex, Tepadina

Tepadina (thiotepa) injection is used for several purposes. It treats adenocarcinoma (a type of cancer) of the breast or ovary. It is also used to control malignant effusions — abnormal fluid buildup in body cavities caused by cancer spreading to those areas. For bladder cancer, Tepadina treats superficial papillary carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Tepadina is also used in pediatric patients with class 3 beta-thalassemia (a severe inherited blood disorder). In those patients, it is given as part of a preparative regimen — a conditioning treatment to reduce the risk of graft rejection before an allogeneic stem cell transplant (a transplant using donor stem cells), alongside the chemotherapy drugs busulfan and cyclophosphamide.
