Thyroid Extract and Venetoclax

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

Oral Drugs

Why this applies to Venetoclax

Venetoclax falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.

Food and medications can interfere with thyroid hormone absorption. Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.
Severity Minor Likelihood Likely Evidence A

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here the concern runs the other way around from most interactions. It isn't that venetoclax changes your thyroid extract, it's that taking the two together at the same time of day could blunt how well the thyroid hormone is absorbed. Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) like an empty stomach, and swallowing them alongside another pill, food, or minerals can lower the amount your body picks up.

This is a minor timing issue, not a dangerous reaction, and it doesn't make venetoclax weaker or stronger. The simple fix is spacing: take your thyroid product on an empty stomach, ideally 30 to 60 minutes before other things. Since venetoclax dosing for leukemia is carefully managed, please confirm your exact schedule with your oncology pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Venetoclax page

“Venetoclax (Venclexta) is a targeted leukemia and lymphoma drug whose blood level is managed carefully, since too much invites serious side effects and too little gives the cancer room. That makes this a list to treat with genuine caution.”

About Thyroid Extract

What is Thyroid Extract?

Thyroid Extract
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Weight management
  • Sluggish metabolism
  • General thyroid support

Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.
