Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP1A2 at high concentrations. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Zileuton (Zyflo) and Giloy. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear zileuton out of your system. In lab dish studies, Tinospora cordifolia has been shown to slow that same enzyme down (at fairly high concentrations). In theory, if it slows the breakdown of zileuton, the drug could build up a bit and you might notice more of its usual side effects, things like headache, nausea, belly pain, or upset stomach.

I want to be straight with you though: this is only theoretical, based on test-tube data, and it hasn't actually been reported in real people. Both zileuton and this herb can also stress the liver on their own, so that's worth watching. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP2C9. Animal research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract 400 mg/kg twice daily for 14 days reduces the clearance and increases plasma levels of glyburide, a CYP2C9 substrate. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down zileuton. Lab studies hint that Tinospora cordifolia (Giloy) may slow that same enzyme down. If that happens, zileuton could clear out more slowly and build up a bit in your system. Zileuton isn't a prodrug, so more drug hanging around means a stronger chance of its usual side effects, things like nausea, stomach upset, headache, or strain on the liver.

I'll be honest with you though, this is mostly theory from test tube and animal work, and it hasn't been seen in real people. Since both zileuton and this herb can each stress the liver on their own, that's the part I'd flag. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Zileuton

What Is Zileuton Used For?

Brand names: Zyflo, Zyflo CR

Zileuton is used for the ongoing prevention and treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents aged 12 and older. It is a maintenance medicine — meaning it is taken regularly to keep asthma under control, not to stop an asthma attack once it has started.

Zyflo (the tablet form) and zileuton extended-release tablets are both approved for this same purpose. Neither form should be used to treat a sudden asthma attack. However, both can be continued during a flare-up of asthma while you also use your rescue inhaler.
