CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Codeine Phosphate
Codeine Phosphate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Wild Lettuce interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: codeine is an opioid that already makes a lot of people drowsy, foggy, or lightheaded. Wild lettuce has its own calming, sleepy reputation thanks to compounds in its milky sap. Put the two together and those mellow effects can stack on top of each other. So you might feel more sedated, more dizzy, or have slower breathing than you'd expect from the codeine alone.
I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these things work rather than strong human studies. Still, with an opioid I'd rather you be cautious. If you're using codeine for pain or cough and you're thinking about wild lettuce for sleep, please run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, especially before driving or combining with anything else that makes you sleepy.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Codeine Phosphate page
“Codeine phosphate is an opioid painkiller and cough suppressant that slows breathing along with brain activity, and the wrong supplement can push that effect into dangerous territory. Seven of the 144 documented ingredients rate major, and nearly all of that serious risk comes from things that deepen sedation.”

- Insomnia and trouble sleeping
- Anxiety and restlessness
- Pain relief
- Cough and respiratory symptoms
- Muscle spasms
Wild lettuce is a traditional herb used mainly for sleep, anxiety, and pain, but solid human research supporting these uses is very limited. About Codeine
What Is Codeine Used For?
Brand name: Codeine
Codeine Sulfate tablets are used for the management of mild to moderate pain in adults and adolescents when other treatments have not worked well enough or are not tolerated. It is an opioid medication, so it is only appropriate when non-opioid options are inadequate.
Because of its serious risks — including addiction, misuse, and overdose — codeine is reserved for patients who truly need an opioid. Prescribers are expected to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible.
