Tree Turmeric and Codeine Phosphate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Codeine Phosphate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Codeine Phosphate

Codeine Phosphate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.

Theoretically, use of tree turmeric along with CNS depressants might increase the risk of additive therapeutic and adverse effects.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have sedative effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: codeine already slows things down in your brain, causing drowsiness, slowed breathing, and that foggy, sleepy feeling. Tree turmeric (mainly its berberine) has shown sedative effects in animal studies, so the worry is that stacking the two could pile on the calming effect. You might feel extra sleepy, dizzy, or more out of it than codeine alone would make you.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so it may not amount to much in real life. Still, if you take codeine and want to try a tree turmeric supplement, run it past your pharmacist or doctor first. Don't stop or change your codeine on your own.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Codeine Phosphate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, tree turmeric might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2D6.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the twist with codeine: it doesn't do much on its own. Your body has to convert it into morphine using an enzyme called CYP2D6, and that morphine is what actually eases your pain and quiets a cough. The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that same enzyme down.

So in this case, blocking CYP2D6 could mean less codeine gets turned into morphine, which may leave you with weaker pain relief or less cough control rather than more side effects. Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical and based on lab and early human data, so it may not be a big deal for everyone. Still, if your codeine doesn't seem to be working as well, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Codeine Phosphate page

“Codeine phosphate is an opioid painkiller and cough suppressant that slows breathing along with brain activity, and the wrong supplement can push that effect into dangerous territory. Seven of the 144 documented ingredients rate major, and nearly all of that serious risk comes from things that deepen sedation.”
