Here's the simple version: the dextromethorphan in this cough product is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Berberine, the active ingredient in tree turmeric, can slow that enzyme down. So if you pair them, dextromethorphan may not get broken down as quickly and can build up a bit more than usual.

In real terms, that could mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy. The phenylephrine part isn't really the concern here. Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical, backed by lab work and some early human data, so it's not a sure thing. Still, since this is a short-term cold medicine, it's worth a quick check with your pharmacist before combining the two.

Here's the gist with this combo. The berberine in tree turmeric can mildly block an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant in Vicks Formula 44D). If that pathway slows down, more dextromethorphan can hang around, which might make side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, or a little nausea more noticeable.

The good news is this is a fairly modest effect, and the phenylephrine part isn't really affected the same way. For most people taking this cough syrup for a few days, it's unlikely to be a big deal, especially with food-level amounts. Still, if you use concentrated berberine supplements regularly, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before combining them.

Here's the gist for your Vicks Formula 44D, which contains dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant) plus phenylephrine. Your body clears dextromethorphan using a liver enzyme called CYP2D6.
