Tree Turmeric + Metoprolol
Metoprolol brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL.
Metoprolol falls into 2 drug categories that Tree Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking tree turmeric along with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Tree Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Metoprolol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Tree Turmeric in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Metoprolol
Metoprolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Tree Turmeric interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can have hypotensive effects. Also, a meta-analysis of clinical research suggests that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine (Norvasc) can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with taking amlodipine alone.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: tree turmeric (the source of berberine) seems to have its own mild blood-pressure-lowering action. Metoprolol already slows your heart rate and relaxes your blood vessels to bring your pressure down. Stack the two together and you may get an additive effect, meaning your blood pressure or heart rate could dip a little lower than expected.
If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, unusually tired, or faint when you stand up too fast. I want to be honest about the evidence though: this concern mostly comes from animal studies and a small bit of human data with a different blood pressure drug, so it's more theoretical than proven. Food-level amounts are unlikely to matter, but concentrated berberine supplements are a different story. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Metoprolol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of tree turmeric, can inhibit CYP2D6.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body clears metoprolol mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. The berberine in tree turmeric appears to slow that same enzyme down. When clearance slows, metoprolol can build up a bit more than usual, which may make its effects stronger. With metoprolol, that could show up as a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling unusually tired.
I want to keep this in perspective though. This concern comes mostly from lab work and some early human data, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Concentrated berberine supplements are far more likely to matter than tiny culinary amounts. Please don't change anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you notice your pulse dropping or feel faint.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metoprolol page
“With metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), a beta-blocker for high blood pressure and heart problems, these interactions deserve genuine care, starting with the five rated major. Most entries pull blood pressure one way or the other: many supplements add to metoprolol's lowering effect and can drop pressure too far, while a few, tyramine…”

About Tree Turmeric
What is Tree Turmeric?
- Blood sugar support
- High cholesterol
- Digestive complaints
- Skin and eye conditions
- Antimicrobial uses
- Liver support
Tree turmeric (Berberis aristata) is a shrub used in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) medicine, valued mainly for its berberine content. Early research suggests possible benefits for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality human evidence is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Metoprolol
What Is Metoprolol Used For?
Brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL
Metoprolol is used to treat several heart and blood pressure conditions. Metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL) are approved for high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain from the heart), and heart failure. Metoprolol tartrate tablets (including Lopressor) are approved for high blood pressure, angina, and — when used alongside intravenous metoprolol — to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death after a definite or suspected heart attack.
Metoprolol tartrate injection (intravenous form) is used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack to reduce cardiovascular death, and is followed by oral metoprolol therapy. Lowering blood pressure with metoprolol reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

Metoprolol Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Metoprolol as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Tree Turmeric — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
