Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Zaleplon (Sonata) is a sleep aid that works by calming activity in your brain. Yerba mansa is a traditional plant that may have a mild calming or sedating quality of its own. When you put two things together that both slow down the nervous system, the effects can stack up. So in theory, taking yerba mansa alongside your zaleplon could leave you feeling extra drowsy, groggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet, especially the morning after.

I'll be honest with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances behave, not on strong human studies of the two together. It's not a reason to panic, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before you combine them, so you can stay safe.
