Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is already a strong sedating antihistamine, so it tends to make you drowsy, foggy, and a little slow on its own. Yerba mansa is traditionally thought to have a calming, relaxing quality, and the worry here is simply that the two together could add up and leave you more sleepy or groggy than you expected.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how these things work, not on solid human studies, so don't panic. Still, if you take them together, go easy, watch for extra drowsiness or grogginess, and avoid driving until you know how you feel. When in doubt, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
