Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, 100 mg per capsule. Beta-glucans are soluble fibers derived from yeast, mushrooms, or cereal grains — they're also found naturally in foods like oats and barley.

The capsule itself is filled with inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose (a binder), gelatin, and silica (an anti-caking agent).

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Beta-glucans's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: maintain or stimulate immune effectiveness.
  • We looked for evidence on: Aging, Allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Atopic dermatitis (eczema), Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Cancer, Canker sores — and 4 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Beta-glucans is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Beta-glucans is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Cancer, Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Atopic dermatitis (eczema), and more.

Beta-glucans are likely effective for two conditions: dyslipidemia (abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels) and coronary heart disease (CHD). The evidence supporting these uses comes from clinical research showing benefits in these areas.

If you're considering this supplement for heart health or cholesterol management, the research is promising — though you should always discuss it with your doctor as part of your overall treatment plan.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Beta-glucans from food are generally well tolerated by most people. Concentrated supplements like this one, however, haven't been studied as thoroughly, so caution is advised.

In clinical trials, oral beta-glucans were well-tolerated overall, though one child in a high-dose cancer trial developed temporary liver enzyme elevations shortly after starting the supplement. There isn't enough safety data on concentrated supplement doses during breastfeeding, so talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist if you're nursing.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Beta-glucans.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: immunosuppressants / transplant drugs.
  • For scale: 293 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check before starting if you take any blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) or immunosuppressants — beta-glucans may lower blood pressure and might interfere with drugs meant to suppress immunity. Both are Moderate-severity interactions.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

If you have high cholesterol or coronary heart disease and your doctor supports it, beta-glucans have research behind them. If you take blood pressure medication or immunosuppressants, you'll need to clear this with your own doctor or pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real.

Otherwise, most people tolerate it well, though safety data on supplements is thinner than it is for food sources.

Formula

Purified Beta-1,3/1,6-Glucan

Beta-glucan is a complex polysaccharide composed of glucose molecules extracted and purified from the cell wall of common baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Beta-glucan is used to maintain or stimulate the effectiveness of the immune system. Animal and human cell culture studies have shown that beta-glucan can stimulate several aspects of immune function, such as phagocytosis and interleukin production. Source Naturals Beta Glucan uses a purification process that removes the mannoproteins and yeast residues that may reduce the effectiveness of beta-glucan.
