Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product has one active ingredient: Brahmi Whole Herb Extract, Dry (bacopa). Bacopa is used in traditional medicine for cognition and memory support.

The liquid also contains alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients that help deliver and preserve the extract.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Bacopa's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Memory and cognitive support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Cognitive function, Cognitive impairment, Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Memory, Age-related memory decline, Brain health.
  • The closest evidence on file: Bacopa is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Bacopa is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Cognitive function, Cognitive impairment.

The evidence for bacopa isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, ADHD, back pain, or cognitive function and impairment.

If you're considering it for one of these uses, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether the current research supports it for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bacopa is generally well tolerated in studies, though quality and long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dry mouth, headache, and nausea.

Some people report drowsiness, insomnia, or vivid dreams. Gastrointestinal complaints (cramping, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and appetite changes) show up in 12% to 30% of study participants.

There isn't enough safety information to know whether bacopa is safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — the data advises against it during both. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.

Before you take Brahmi, check if you're on any medications broken down by your liver's CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP3A4 enzymes — bacopa might slow that process (Moderate severity). Also flag cholinergic drugs (those that boost acetylcholine, like cevimeline), anticholinergic drugs, or thyroid hormone.

Anticholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cevimeline (Evoxac)

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the effects and adverse effects of cevimeline.
In one case, a 58-year-old female taking cevimeline long-term for Sjogren syndrome experienced hyperhidrosis, malaise, nausea, and tachycardia shortly after taking a single dose of bacopa. Symptoms resolved after two days. Cevimeline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP3A4, and researchers theorize that bacopa may have inhibited these isoenzymes. However, it is unclear if bacopa causes clinically significant inhibition of either CYP2D6 or CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use of bacopa with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. Theoretically, this could result in additive cholinergic effects when used with cholinergic drugs.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. It is not known whether this is clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.

Brahmi by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Brahmi by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Brahmi has a known interaction with 930 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Brahmi contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is bacopa, and what's it supposed to do?
Bacopa (also called Brahmi) is an herb used in traditional medicine for memory and cognitive support. This product is a concentrated extract of the whole herb.
Does bacopa actually work for memory or brain function?
The evidence isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate bacopa for Alzheimer disease, ADHD, cognitive function, or cognitive impairment, so we can't say whether it works for these uses.
What side effects might I notice?
The most common are stomach-related: cramps, diarrhea, bloating, nausea, and appetite changes. Some people also report dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, or vivid dreams. Gastrointestinal complaints show up in about 12% to 30% of people who take it.
Is bacopa safe to use while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — there isn't enough safety information, so the data advises against it during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific situation.
Why does this product interact with so many medications?
Bacopa may slow how your liver breaks down certain drugs, which can raise their levels in your bloodstream. It also affects acetylcholine, a brain chemical that some medications target. These are theoretical risks based on lab research; the real-world significance varies and isn't fully clear.
What's in this liquid besides the bacopa extract?
The inactive ingredients are alcohol, water, and glycerin — they help preserve and deliver the extract.
