Bacopa and Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Bacopa interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bacopa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Of the three ingredients in Damason-P, the one that matters here is the caffeine. Your body clears caffeine using a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, and lab studies hint that bacopa might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, caffeine could linger longer and you might feel jittery, have a racing heart, or trouble sleeping. The aspirin and hydrocodone parts aren't really affected by this particular interaction.

Here's the honest part: this comes only from test-tube research, and even those results disagree with each other. So it's more of a theoretical concern than something we see causing problems in people. Still, if you notice extra jitteriness or a fast heartbeat after combining them, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Aspirin, Caffeine, Hydrocodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

This combination pill blends aspirin, caffeine, and hydrocodone (the opioid for pain). Of these, hydrocodone is the one partly handled by the liver enzyme CYP3A4. The theory here is that bacopa might slow that enzyme down a little, which could let hydrocodone build up slightly. If that happened, you might notice more of its usual effects, like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or feeling foggy.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from lab and test-tube studies, and even those disagree with each other. So this is more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, since hydrocodone causes sedation on its own, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two regularly.

About Bacopa

What is Bacopa?

Bacopa
  • Memory and cognitive support
  • Anxiety and stress
  • ADHD symptoms
  • Age-related memory decline
  • General brain health

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
