When you take manganese in normal amounts—from food and standard supplements—it's generally well tolerated with no serious side effects. The problem arises with high doses.

High-dose manganese supplements can cause neurotoxicity, including Parkinson-like symptoms (tremor, stiffness, slowed movement). One documented case involved a person who took 100 mg daily for 2 to 4 years and developed irreversible Parkinson disease.

At very high doses, manganese can also damage the liver, causing cirrhosis and fatty liver disease. For pregnancy and lactation, the data is mixed and unclear.
