Chromium Chelate Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Chromium Chelate against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Chromium Chelate contains one active ingredient: chromium, a mineral your body needs to regulate blood sugar and support healthy metabolism. The tablet also includes cellulose, vegetable stearate, and silica as inactive binders and fillers that hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Chromium is rated likely effective for treating chromium deficiency itself. For blood sugar control, the evidence is mixed: it's rated possibly effective for type 2 diabetes, but possibly ineffective for prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance), high blood pressure, and schizophrenia.
The strength of evidence varies, so talk with your doctor about whether this supplement makes sense for your particular situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal upset, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.
Rare serious effects — kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and low blood platelet counts — have been reported, mostly with high or long-term doses. Some people have also reported skin rashes, hives, or contact dermatitis after taking chromium supplements.
For pregnancy, chromium from food or a prenatal vitamin is generally considered acceptable, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends them. Safety data on higher doses in pregnancy is limited.
If you're nursing, there isn't enough data on file to say whether extra chromium is safe, so check with your pharmacist or doctor.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check any insulin or antidiabetes medications you're on — chromium may increase the risk of low blood sugar. If you take levothyroxine (thyroid hormone), chromium may reduce how well it works; your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
NSAIDs and aspirin may increase chromium levels in your body, though this is a minor interaction.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chromium Chelate may help if you have a chromium deficiency, and it might offer some benefit for type 2 diabetes — but only under medical supervision, since it can lower blood sugar. If you take insulin, diabetes medications, levothyroxine, or NSAIDs, check your exact medications with the tool on this page before you start.
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor if you're pregnant, nursing, or considering high doses.

Chromium Chelate by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chromium Chelate by Douglas Laboratories does interact with several medication types, most notably with drugs that affect blood sugar.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chromium may work together with insulin and antidiabetes drugs (like metformin, sulfonylureas, or GLP-1 agonists) to lower blood sugar further than either would alone — raising the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If you take insulin or any medication for diabetes, you'll want to monitor your blood sugar closely and talk with your doctor before starting this supplement.
Chromium may also interfere with levothyroxine (the thyroid hormone replacement in Synthroid and generics). Research shows it can reduce levothyroxine levels in your blood by about 17% when taken at the same time.
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen, and aspirin, may increase how much chromium your body absorbs — these are listed as minor interactions.
Altogether, these interactions span 178 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your exact prescriptions before you start.

For each ingredient in Chromium Chelate with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Chromium
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research shows that taking chromium might lower blood glucose levels, especially in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
Theoretically, concomitant use of chromium and insulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In clinical research, chromium has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity,
Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Others)
Chromium might bind levothyroxine in the intestinal tract and decrease levothyroxine absorption.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that taking chromium picolinate 1000 mcg with levothyroxine 1 mg decreases serum levels of levothyroxine by 17% when compared to taking levothyroxine alone. Advise patients to take levothyroxine at least 30 minutes before or 3-4 hours after taking chromium.
Aspirin
Theoretically, aspirin might increase chromium absorption.
Animal research suggests that aspirin may increase chromium absorption and chromium levels in the blood.
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (Nsaids)
NSAIDs might increase chromium levels in the body.
Drugs that are prostaglandin inhibitors, such as NSAIDs, seem to increase chromium absorption and retention.
