Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This powder contains 2 active ingredients: sodium and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Sodium is an essential electrolyte your body needs in small amounts, but the amount in supplements and high dietary intake can raise blood pressure and strain the heart and kidneys — which is why it's listed here as a concern.
CLA is a fatty acid sometimes used as a weight-loss aid, though we hold no interaction data on it. The inactive ingredients are fillers, binders, and flavoring agents common in powdered supplements, including additional sodium from salt and sodium compounds.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
Sodium has limited evidence for most conditions people ask about. It is likely effective for cystic fibrosis, a genetic lung condition where sodium balance is critical.
For amphotericin B nephrotoxicity (kidney damage from an antifungal drug), sodium is possibly effective. For bipolar disorder and congestive heart failure (weak heart pumping), the evidence is too limited to rate it one way or the other.
CLA's effectiveness is not documented in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Sodium is well tolerated in the amounts you normally eat in food. The safety notes are clear: normal dietary sodium is fine, but sodium supplements or very high intake can raise blood pressure and strain your heart and kidneys — avoid them without talking to your doctor first.
Serious adverse effects from oral sodium are rare but can include worsened high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney disease. Long-term high sodium intake is also linked to increased gastric cancer risk in population studies.
Pregnancy and lactation data are mixed: sodium is rated likely safe in pregnancy but possibly unsafe in lactation, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you take blood pressure medication (antihypertensives), lithium (for mood disorders), corticosteroids (steroids), didanosine (Videx, for HIV), or any other sodium-containing medication. All of these interact with the sodium in this powder at Moderate severity.
No interactions are documented for CLA, the product's other active ingredient, because we hold no data for it.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is best avoided if you take blood pressure medication, lithium, or other sodium-sensitive drugs — the sodium content could interfere with how they work or raise electrolyte risks. If you don't take any of those medications, normal amounts of dietary sodium are fine, but supplementing with extra sodium without medical advice isn't recommended, especially if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney problems.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, particularly if you're on any chronic medications.

CLA Powder Vanilla Wafer by GNC Total Lean Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
GNC Total Lean CLA Powder Vanilla Wafer contains sodium, which interacts with a number of medications.
The most serious concern involves blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives): high sodium intake can reduce how well these medications work and may require your doctor to increase your dose to keep blood pressure under control.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Sodium also interacts with corticosteroids (steroids used for inflammation), lithium (a mood stabilizer), didanosine (an HIV medication), sodium phosphate bowel-prep solutions, tolvaptan (a water-retention drug), and other sodium-containing medications — all rated Moderate severity. With corticosteroids, extra sodium raises the risk of dangerously high sodium levels in your blood.
Lithium is especially sensitive: high sodium intake can lower lithium levels and reduce effectiveness, while low sodium can dangerously raise them. The other interactions carry similar electrolyte-balance concerns.
We could not check CLA, the product's other active ingredient, for drug interactions — we hold no data for it. Altogether, these interactions span 205 individual medications.
Before you start this product, run your exact medications through the checker on this page or confirm with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you take any blood pressure medication or lithium.

For each ingredient in CLA Powder Vanilla Wafer with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Sodium
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, a high intake of dietary sodium might reduce the effectiveness of antihypertensive drugs.
High intake of dietary sodium can increase systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Also, high intake of sodium may necessitate increased use of antihypertensive medications to achieve blood pressure control in some patients, such as those with chronic kidney disease.
Corticosteroids
Concomitant use of mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Mineralocorticoids and some glucocorticoids (corticosteroids) cause sodium retention. This effect is dose-related and depends on mineralocorticoid potency. It is most common with hydrocortisone, cortisone, and fludrocortisone, followed by prednisone and prednisolone.
Didanosine (Videx)
Concomitant use of didanosine with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Didanosine formulations contain a significant amount of sodium.
Lithium
Altering dietary intake of sodium might alter the levels and clinical effects of lithium.
High sodium intake can reduce plasma concentrations of lithium by increasing lithium excretion. Reducing sodium intake can significantly increase plasma concentrations of lithium and cause lithium toxicity in patients being treated with lithium carbonate. Stabilizing sodium intake is shown to reduce the percentage of patients with lithium level fluctuations above 0.8 mEq/L. Patients taking lithium should avoid significant alterations in their dietary intake of sodium.
Sodium Phosphates
Theoretically, concomitant use of sodium phosphate with sodium supplements might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Use of high doses (> 45 mL in 24 hours) of sodium phosphate, such as those used for bowel cleansing before surgery, can lead to serious electrolyte disturbances, including hypernatremia. The risk of hypernatremia is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Sodium-Containing Drugs
Concomitant use of sodium-containing drugs with additional sodium from dietary or supplemental sources may increase the risk of hypernatremia and long-term sodium-related complications.
The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) intake level of 2.3 grams of sodium daily indicates the intake at which it is believed that chronic disease risk increases for the apparently healthy population. Some medications contain high quantities of sodium. When used in conjunction with sodium supplements or high-sodium diets, the CDRR may be exceeded. Additionally, concomitant use may increase the risk for hypernatremia; this risk is highest in the elderly and people with other risk factors for electrolyte disturbances.
Tolvaptan (Samsca)
Theoretically, concomitant use of tolvaptan with sodium might increase the risk of hypernatremia.
Tolvaptan is a vasopressin receptor 2 antagonist that is used to increase sodium levels in patients with hyponatremia. Patients taking tolvaptan should use caution with the use of sodium salts such as sodium chloride.
