However, people with weakened immune systems — including those who are critically ill, have central lines or breathing tubes, or are taking immunosuppressants — should check with their doctor first, as rare cases of serious bacterial infection (bacteremia, sepsis) have been reported in that population.

Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea can occur but are uncommon.
