Essential Flora Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Essential Flora against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Essential Flora by Logos Nutritionals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Essential Flora contains 10 active probiotic ingredients—live beneficial bacteria strains that support gut health. The ones we've reviewed include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis DE111, and Bifidobacterium breve, along with several others.
These are all "good" bacteria your gut naturally hosts; the product is designed to help restore or maintain healthy bacterial balance, especially after antibiotics or during digestive upset. The capsules also contain inactive ingredients—cellulose, gellan gum, purified water, rice dextrin, and medium chain triglyceride—which are fillers and binders that hold the formula together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these strains varies by condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bacillus coagulans is possibly effective for constipation and IBS. Bacillus subtilis DE111 is possibly effective for antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
For many other uses—athletic performance, asthma, anxiety, and others—the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate effectiveness. Bifidobacterium breve is actually rated possibly ineffective for age-related cognitive decline and sepsis.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The live bacteria in Essential Flora are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. However, there are some cautions worth knowing.
In rare cases—mainly in severely ill, immunocompromised, or very young patients—these bacteria have caused serious infections like bacteremia or sepsis. If you're critically ill, have a weakened immune system, are a preterm infant, or have recent surgery involving indwelling catheters, talk to your doctor before using this product.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea can occur but are uncommon. Bifidobacterium longum carries a "Possibly Safe" rating for pregnancy and lactation, though limited safety data exist for the other strains—check with your healthcare provider if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Antibiotic drugs are the main medication type to double-check. Since the live bacteria in this product can be killed by antibiotics, you'll want to separate the two—ask your pharmacist how many hours apart to take them.
No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Essential Flora is a reasonable choice if you're looking for a multi-strain probiotic for gut health, digestive upset, or IBS—though evidence is stronger for some strains than others. The main thing to watch is timing with antibiotic medications.
If you're healthy with a functioning immune system, it's generally well tolerated; if you're seriously ill, immunocompromised, or postoperative, talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

Essential Flora by Logos Nutritionals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Essential Flora by Logos Nutritionals is a multi-strain probiotic that contains several ingredients we've checked for drug interactions.
The most serious concern involves antibiotic drugs. Four of the live bacteria in this product—Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis DE111, and Bifidobacterium breve—can theoretically have their effectiveness reduced if you take them at the same time as antibiotics.
That's because antibiotics may kill the live organisms in the probiotic. All of these interactions are rated Moderate in severity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The good news is this interaction is manageable: you simply need to separate when you take your antibiotic and this probiotic. Most people space them a few hours apart, but ask your pharmacist or doctor for the best timing for your specific antibiotic.
We weren't able to check Lactobacillus salivarius, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus casei—we don't hold interaction data for these ingredients. Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
Before you start Essential Flora, run your exact medications through the checker on this page to see if any of them need timing adjustments.

Probiotic Bacteria
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
