L-Carnitine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Carnitine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Carnitine by Moss Nutrition
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-carnitine tartrate, a compound that plays a role in how your cells produce energy. The capsule itself is filled with inactive ingredients—cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable stearate, and silicon dioxide—which are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-carnitine is effective for treating L-carnitine deficiency. It's possibly effective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), heart failure (congestive heart failure), and angina (chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart).
The evidence for these other uses is promising but not yet definitive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-carnitine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. The most common side effects are digestive—abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, and reduced appetite—as well as a fish-like body odor.
High doses are more likely to cause stomach upset. Seizures have been reported rarely.
There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's safe during pregnancy; if you're pregnant, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it. It's possibly safe while breastfeeding, but safety data is limited—discuss it with your healthcare provider.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take warfarin, acenocoumarol, or any other blood thinner (anticoagulant)—L-carnitine may increase their effect. Also confirm any thyroid hormone replacement (like levothyroxine) you're on, since L-carnitine might reduce how well it works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-carnitine works well for people with a documented L-carnitine deficiency and shows promise for heart and cholesterol issues. If you take a blood thinner or thyroid hormone, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first—interactions are possible.
Digestive upset and a fishy odor are the main side effects to watch for.

L-Carnitine by Moss Nutrition Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Moss Nutrition's L-Carnitine can interact with blood thinners and thyroid medications.
The most serious concerns involve warfarin (Coumadin) and acenocoumarol (Sintrom), where L-carnitine may increase their blood-thinning effects—a Moderate-severity issue that could raise your bleeding risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Thyroid hormone replacement is also a Moderate-severity concern: L-carnitine may block how your cells absorb thyroid hormone, potentially reducing the medication's effectiveness. If you take thyroid replacement, this deserves a conversation with your doctor before you start.
Altogether, these interactions span 19 individual medications. Before you take this product, run your exact prescriptions—especially any blood thinner or thyroid medication—through the interaction checker on this page or confirm them with your pharmacist or doctor.

For each ingredient in L-Carnitine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Carnitine
Acenocoumarol (Sintrom)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol.
L-carnitine might enhance the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, an oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin, but shorter-acting. There are at least two case reports of INR elevation with concomitant use. In one case, a 33-year-old male with a previously stable INR had an elevated INR of 4.65 after L-carnitine was started and continued for 10 weeks. INR normalized after discontinuation of the L-carnitine-containing product.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, L-carnitine might decrease the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement.
L-carnitine appears to act as a peripheral thyroid hormone antagonist by inhibiting entry of thyroid hormone into the nucleus of cells. Taking L-carnitine also seems to diminish some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
L-carnitine might increase the anticoagulant effects of acenocoumarol, a shorter-acting oral anticoagulant similar to warfarin. There is not enough information to know whether this interaction occurs with L-carnitine and warfarin.
