Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-Carnosine, a compound made naturally in your body. L-Carnosine is present in muscle tissue and may play a role in muscle function and cellular health.

The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—hypromellose, stearic acid, and silicon dioxide—which are standard fillers and binders.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Carnosine's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: healthy aging and muscle vitality.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related cognitive decline, Athletic performance, Muscle strength, Cellular protection, Antioxidant defense.
  • The closest evidence on file: Carnosine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Age-related cognitive decline (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Carnosine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance.

The evidence we hold doesn't establish that L-Carnosine works well for most of its marketed uses. For autism spectrum disorder, the research suggests it's possibly ineffective.

For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, cataracts, and general cognitive impairment, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it one way or the other. If you're considering this supplement for one of these conditions, talk with your doctor about what the current science actually supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-Carnosine is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but we don't have much long-term safety data, so caution is warranted if you're thinking of taking it for months or years. Some people have reported decreased appetite, dry mouth, small weight changes, foot and joint pain, and rarely, pneumonia.

The safety information for pregnancy and breastfeeding is insufficient—there isn't enough data to know whether it's safe, so you should avoid it during pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Carnosine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 86 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check your diabetes medications (antidiabetes drugs) before starting this supplement—carnosine may increase the risk of low blood sugar when combined with them. Use the medication checker on this page to verify your specific drugs.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-Carnosine might interest someone curious about muscle health or the conditions listed above, but the evidence for those uses is weak or unclear. If you take diabetes medications, this product warrants a conversation with your pharmacist first because of the low blood sugar risk.

Long-term safety isn't well established, and pregnancy or breastfeeding are times to skip it.

Formula

L-Carnosine (beta-Alanyl-L-Histidine) is a dipeptide, consisting of alanine and histidine. It is naturally found in high concentrations in muscles and nerve tissues and its levels are known to decrease with age. L-Carnosine protects cell and tissue structures during the aging process through its free-radical neutralizing and membrane-stabilizing functions.
