Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains a single active ingredient: L-glutamine (500 mg per capsule), an amino acid your body uses for immune function, gut health, and muscle recovery. The capsule also contains three inactive ingredients — gelatin, vegetable magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose — which are fillers and binders that help hold the supplement together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: muscle support and athletic performance recovery.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Exercise-induced muscle damage, Postoperative recovery, Wound healing, muscle strength, endurance — and 1 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Glutamine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Postoperative recovery (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Glutamine is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Athletic performance.
  • Also on file: Glutamine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Wound healing, Exercise-induced muscle damage.

The evidence for L-glutamine is mixed and depends on what you're using it for. It's rated effective for sickle cell disease.

For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative (after-surgery) recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence suggests it may be helpful, but the data is not yet conclusive. If you're considering this supplement for any of these conditions, talk with your doctor about whether it makes sense for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects from taking it by mouth are belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and gastrointestinal pain.

A few patients with bipolar disorder taking high doses (around 4 grams daily) reported mania or hypomania, so if you have bipolar disorder, mention this product to your doctor before use. You should use extra caution if you have kidney or liver disease — take it only if your doctor recommends it.

There isn't enough reliable safety data in pregnancy, so avoid supplemental doses unless your doctor advises it. The same goes for breastfeeding — the data isn't sufficient to know it's safe, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it while nursing.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Glutamine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: seizure medications.
  • For scale: 50 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs), check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product — glutamine might reduce how well they work, though this hasn't been seen in patients yet. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-glutamine may be worth considering if you have sickle cell disease or are recovering from surgery or critical illness, and if your doctor agrees. However, if you take an anticonvulsant (seizure medication), check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Since kidney or liver disease changes how you handle supplements, and breastfeeding safety isn't well established, have that conversation with your healthcare provider before starting.

L-Glutamine is a must-have supplement especially for workouts. Approximately one hour of intense exercise may deplete the body's natural supply of L-Glutamine. This depletion may stress out your body, leading to muscle deterioration. Amazing Muscle L-Glutamine may help decrease muscle waste, promote muscle growth and repair skeletal muscles. L-Glutamine may also help improve athletic performance, cellular detoxification, boost metabolism and assist in recovery from endurance exercises. L-Glutamine not only supports athletic performance, it also promotes brain health by working as a neurotransmitter to improve memory, focus and concentration.

L-Glutamine 500 mg by Amazing Muscle: Common Questions

Does L-Glutamine 500 mg by Amazing Muscle interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, L-Glutamine 500 mg has a known interaction with 50 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Glutamine 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take L-glutamine while pregnant?
The safety data rates L-glutamine as likely safe in pregnancy. However, the facts don't cover whether supplemental doses specifically are recommended during pregnancy — that's a personal decision. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product makes sense for your situation.
Can I take L-glutamine while breastfeeding?
There isn't enough reliable safety data to know whether supplemental L-glutamine is safe while breastfeeding. Avoid taking it unless your doctor or pharmacist advises you to — they can give you personalized guidance based on your health.

It depends what you're using it for. L-glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease. For surgery recovery, critical illness, and HIV/AIDS-related wasting, the evidence suggests it may help, but the proof isn't definitive yet. Ask your doctor whether it fits your needs.
Is this safe if I have kidney or liver disease?
People with kidney or liver disease should use L-glutamine only under medical supervision. These organs affect how your body processes the supplement, so your doctor needs to decide if it's appropriate for you and at what dose.
I have bipolar disorder — is this safe for me?
A small number of people with bipolar disorder have reported mania or hypomania when taking glutamine at high doses (around 4 grams daily). Mention this product to your doctor or pharmacist before starting, so they can assess the risk for your specific situation.
