Moderate evidence
L-Glutamine is rated effective for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence is possibly effective—meaning some research suggests a benefit, but we'd like to see more.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glutamine is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: belching, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
Headache and musculoskeletal pain have also been reported. Two cases of mood changes (mania or hypomania) occurred in people with bipolar disorder taking up to 4 grams daily, and one case of dizziness resolved when the dose was cut in half.
People with kidney or liver disease should only use it under medical supervision. There isn't enough safety data to recommend supplement doses during pregnancy or breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
