HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Theanine 100 mg by PureFormulas
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This capsule contains one active ingredient: L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in green tea. The remaining ingredients are inactive — microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and vegetable stearate — which serve as fillers and binders to hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-theanine is possibly effective for boosting cognitive function, according to our data. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and cancer, the evidence isn't established well enough to rate it — meaning we don't have enough reliable data to say whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults when used short-term. Long-term safety hasn't been thoroughly studied, so that's a gap we can't fill.
The most common side effects reported are headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, and more vivid dreams. One pediatric case of facial tics was reported after taking a much higher dose (400 mg daily), though the child had a prior history of tics and the tics stopped when the supplement was discontinued.
Not enough safety data exists for pregnancy or breastfeeding — the safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this is right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before taking this if you're on antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications) — theanine may lower your blood pressure further. Also confirm it with your doctor or pharmacist if you take central nervous system depressants like sleep aids or anti-anxiety medications, or if you're on antidepressants, though the serotonin concern is mostly theoretical.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-theanine might help with focus and thinking if you're looking for a natural cognitive boost. If you take blood pressure medication or sedating drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interaction risk is real enough to need a conversation.
Overall, it's generally well tolerated short-term, but long-term use is understudied.

L-Theanine 100 mg by PureFormulas Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Theanine 100 mg by PureFormulas interacts with blood pressure medications through its potential to lower blood pressure on its own.
When combined with antihypertensive drugs, this effect may be amplified, raising the risk of blood pressure dropping too low. Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There's also a theoretical minor concern with central nervous system depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications) — theanine might add to their drowsy or sedating effects, though it's unclear how often this matters in real-world use. Similarly, theanine's effect on serotonin is mixed in research, but no actual cases of serotonin syndrome have been reported with it, even when combined with serotonergic drugs like antidepressants.
If you take blood pressure medication, an antidepressant, or anything that makes you drowsy, run your exact medications through the interaction checker below before you start.

L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
