Lumbricus Tonic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by NutriCology
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lumbricus Tonic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lumbricus Tonic by NutriCology
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Lumbricus Tonic contains four active ingredients in a proprietary blend formula. Three of them are plant extracts: atractylodes (bai-zhu) root extract, poria mushroom extract, and calamus (grass-leaf sweetflag) root extract.
The product also contains earthworm extract. The capsules themselves are made with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, cellulose, and L-leucine as inactive binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The effectiveness evidence for Lumbricus Tonic's ingredients is not established in the data we hold. Atractylodes has been evaluated for anorexia nervosa, cachexia, lung cancer, common cold, and diarrhea—all rated insufficient evidence.
Poria mushroom extract similarly shows insufficient evidence for cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, dementia, diabetes, diabetic kidney disease, and diarrhea. Calamus was evaluated for bronchitis, anorexia nervosa, asthma, and cancer, also with insufficient evidence.
No ingredient in this formula has documented, reliable evidence of effectiveness for any condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Safety data for these ingredients are limited. Atractylodes is traditionally used but human safety studies are sparse, so caution is advised.
The most significant concern is calamus: it contains beta-asarone, a compound the FDA banned from food because it may cause cancer, and calamus is considered likely unsafe for oral use overall. Calamus may also cause nausea, vomiting, and in rare cases intestinal paralysis.
Atractylodes and poria can cause allergic reactions, dry mouth, and nausea in some people. Poria is generally well tolerated in traditional use but has limited human data.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Atractylodes is rated possibly unsafe in pregnancy and should be avoided while breastfeeding due to lack of safety data. Poria is best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding—human safety data do not exist.
Calamus is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy and lactation because it may affect the uterus and contains potentially toxic compounds.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting Lumbricus Tonic, double-check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin (Moderate risk of bleeding), CNS depressants or sedatives (Moderate risk of enhanced drowsiness), antihypertensive or blood pressure medications (Moderate risk of low blood pressure), any drugs processed through CYP2D6 or CYP3A4 liver pathways (Moderate risk of increased drug levels), MAOIs or certain antidepressants (Moderate risk of interaction), or anticholinergic or cholinergic drugs (Moderate risk of reduced effectiveness or added effects). H2-blocker acid reflux medications carry a Minor interaction.
No interactions are documented for earthworm extract, as we hold no data for it.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product combines ingredients with very limited human safety data and, in calamus's case, a potential cancer risk due to beta-asarone content. Even if you're not pregnant or breastfeeding, none of the active ingredients has reliable evidence of effectiveness for any health condition.
Before taking Lumbricus Tonic, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's appropriate for you, especially if you take any blood thinners, blood pressure medications, sedatives, antidepressants, or any drug metabolized by your liver.

Lumbricus Tonic by NutriCology Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Lumbricus Tonic by NutriCology carries multiple documented interactions through its atractylodes, poria mushroom, and calamus extracts.
The most serious concern is calamus, which may cause cancer—it contains beta-asarone, a possible carcinogen that the FDA has banned from food. Beyond that risk, calamus poses a Moderate interaction with CNS depressants (sedatives and similar drugs), potentially increasing drowsiness and sedation.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Atractylodes and calamus both interact with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners and aspirin-type medications) at Moderate severity, theoretically increasing bleeding risk. Calamus also affects several drug-metabolizing pathways: it may raise levels of medications processed through CYP2D6 and CYP3A4 enzymes, potentially boosting their side effects.
Additionally, calamus interacts with antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure medications), cholinergic drugs, anticholinergic drugs, MAOIs (a class of antidepressant), and H2-blockers (acid reflux medications), all at Moderate severity except H2-blockers (Minor).
Poria mushroom extract also interacts with CNS depressants and with both cholinergic and anticholinergic drugs at Moderate severity. Atractylodes carries additional Minor-severity interactions with CYP1A2 and CYP3A4 substrates.
We were unable to check earthworm extract for interactions.
Altogether, these interactions span 1,218 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to search your exact prescriptions before taking this product.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that atractylenolides II and III, constituents of atractylodes, reduce platelet activation. So far, this has not been shown in humans.
Aromatase Inhibitors
Theoretically, atractylodes may have an additive effect when used with other aromatase inhibitors.
Laboratory research suggests that atractylodes and its constituents exhibit aromatase inhibitor effects.
Hexobarbital
Theoretically, taking atractylodes may prolong the therapeutic and adverse effects of hexobarbital.
In animals, atractylodes has been shown to prolong the effects of hexobarbital. These effects have not been shown in humans.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
