Taken by mouth, artemisinin is generally well-tolerated, though nausea and vomiting are the most common side effects. Rarely, it can cause liver damage (hepatotoxicity) — one documented case involved a person who developed hepatitis after 10 days of high-dose artemisinin and recovered after stopping it.

One mild allergic reaction (rash and cough) has been reported, and if you're allergic to Sweet Annie and take it under the tongue, you may feel numbness or throat itching. Artemisinin should be avoided during pregnancy because of possible harm to the developing baby.

There isn't enough safety data to use it while breastfeeding. This product is generally meant for short-term use only; quality and dose vary widely, so it shouldn't replace proven treatments.

Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP2B6 substrates.
