Why this applies to Omeprazole

Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with Sweet Annie and your omeprazole. Omeprazole is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and Sweet Annie may tug on that enzyme. The tricky part is the lab data points both ways: one compound in the herb (artemisinin) may speed the enzyme up, while the whole extract may slow it down. So we honestly can't say for sure which direction it would go in a real person.

If the enzyme sped up, your omeprazole might clear faster and control your acid a bit less, meaning more heartburn. If it slowed down, you could see a little more of the drug hanging around. Keep in mind this is only test-tube evidence, not proven in people. Before adding Sweet Annie, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
