Manganese Chelate Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Manganese Chelate against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Manganese Chelate contains one active ingredient: manganese in a chelated form, which means it's bound to another compound to help your body absorb it. Manganese is a mineral your body needs in small amounts for bone health, metabolism, and nervous system function.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose, vegetable stearate, and silica—which are fillers and binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Manganese is effective for treating manganese deficiency. For other uses—hay fever (allergic rhinitis), osteoporosis, COPD, weight management, and osteoarthritis—the evidence in our data is insufficient to establish whether it works.
If you're considering this supplement for one of those conditions, that's worth discussing with your doctor to see what the research currently supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Manganese is generally well tolerated when taken in normal dietary amounts. However, high-dose supplements carry real risks.
At doses much higher than what you'd get from food, manganese can damage your nervous system, potentially causing Parkinson-like symptoms. One documented case involved a person taking 100 mg daily for 2 to 4 years who developed irreversible Parkinson disease.
Manganese toxicity can also harm your liver. Because of these risks, avoid high-dose manganese supplements unless a clinician specifically recommends and monitors them.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Manganese Chelate, check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take antipsychotic drugs (such as haloperidol), quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin), or tetracycline antibiotics (such as doxycycline). These interactions are documented at Moderate severity and could reduce antibiotic absorption or increase manganese toxicity risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is appropriate if you have a diagnosed manganese deficiency and your doctor has recommended it. If you take antipsychotic medications or quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics, check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting—the interactions could affect how well your medications work or increase toxicity risk.
For other uses, the evidence doesn't support it yet. Always verify your exact medications on this page's tool before you begin.

Manganese Chelate by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Manganese Chelate by Douglas Laboratories can interact with medications, primarily through manganese's effects on drug absorption and potential for toxicity when combined with certain psychiatric drugs.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is with antipsychotic drugs (Moderate severity). There's a theoretical risk that manganese could increase the chance of manganese toxicity when taken alongside antipsychotics like haloperidol or phenothiazine-derivatives.
A case has been reported of hallucinations and behavioral changes in a patient with liver disease who was taking both haloperidol and manganese.
Manganese may also reduce how well your body absorbs quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics (both Moderate severity). Because manganese is a mineral that binds to other substances in your digestive tract, it can interfere with these antibiotics' absorption—a pattern seen with other similar minerals like calcium and iron.
Although we could check manganese for interactions, it's essential you verify your specific medications with the search tool on this page before starting.

Manganese
Antipsychotic Drugs
Theoretically, the risk for manganese toxicity might increase when taken with antipsychotic drugs.
Hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient with liver disease who was taking haloperidol and manganese. Researchers speculate that taking manganese along with haloperidol, phenothiazine-derivatives, or other antipsychotic medications might increase the risk of manganese toxicity in some patients.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of quinolone antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced quinolone absorption have been reported between quinolones and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, manganese might reduce the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics.
Manganese is a multivalent cation. Interactions resulting in reduced tetracycline absorption have been reported between tetracyclines and other multivalent cations, such as calcium and iron.
