Manganese is generally well tolerated when you take it in the amounts found in food and standard prenatal vitamins. The real concern is high-dose supplements.

High doses can cause serious neurotoxicity (nerve damage), including Parkinson-like symptoms. One reported case involved taking 100 mg daily for 2 to 4 years and led to irreversible Parkinson disease.

Another case in a 13-year-old showed that high manganese exposure caused severe neurological symptoms, liver damage (cirrhosis and fatty liver), and required chelation therapy — a procedure to remove the mineral from the blood — to recover. Because of this risk, avoid high-dose manganese supplements unless a clinician advises it and monitors you.

Theoretically, the risk for manganese toxicity might increase when taken with antipsychotic drugs.
Hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient with liver disease who was taking haloperidol and manganese. Researchers speculate that taking manganese along with haloperidol, phenothiazine-derivatives, or other antipsychotic medications might increase the risk of manganese toxicity in some patients.
