Manganese and Thiothixene

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Thiothixene

Thiothixene falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Manganese interacts with.

Theoretically, the risk for manganese toxicity might increase when taken with antipsychotic drugs.
Hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient with liver disease who was taking haloperidol and manganese. Researchers speculate that taking manganese along with haloperidol, phenothiazine-derivatives, or other antipsychotic medications might increase the risk of manganese toxicity in some patients.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take Navane (thiothixene) and you're thinking about a manganese supplement. This isn't really about manganese changing how your medication works or how it's cleared. Instead, the concern goes the other way: certain older antipsychotics like thiothixene may make it easier for manganese to build up in the body, which could raise the risk of manganese toxicity. That can show up as movement problems, tremors, or mood and behavior changes, some of which can look a lot like the symptoms the medication is meant to manage.

I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based on a single reported case in someone with liver disease, so it's weak evidence. Normal diet won't be an issue. If you're considering a manganese supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Thiothixene page

“Activated charcoal is the entry to know first with thiothixene (Navane). It can bind the drug in the gut and carry it out of the body, and for an antipsychotic controlling psychotic symptoms, a dose that quietly disappears risks relapse.”

About Manganese

What is Manganese?

Manganese
  • Bone health support
  • Antioxidant and enzyme support
  • Filling dietary gaps
  • Metabolism support
  • Wound healing

Manganese is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for bone formation, metabolism, and antioxidant defense, and most people get enough from a normal diet. Supplements may help if you have a genuine deficiency, but too much can be harmful—especially to the nervous system—so do not take high doses without guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.
