HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Marshmallow Root Extract by BulkSupplements.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: marshmallow root extract. The extract is the concentrated form of the marshmallow plant root, which has been used traditionally to soothe mucous membranes in the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.
There are no inactive ingredients listed for this powder.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for marshmallow root extract isn't established in our data. The product is used for conditions like vaginal yeast infections (candidiasis), diarrhea, venous leg ulcers, eczema, and respiratory tract infections, but each of these carries an insufficient evidence rating—meaning the current research doesn't reliably show whether it works for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Marshmallow root extract is generally well tolerated when used short-term, though human safety data are limited beyond that window. During pregnancy, there isn't enough reliable safety information, so it's best avoided.
The same goes for breastfeeding—there isn't enough data to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check if you're on lithium—marshmallow may raise its levels in your blood. Also, if you take oral medications, space them 30 to 60 minutes apart from marshmallow to avoid absorption problems.
Use the interaction checker below to verify your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Marshmallow root extract is a single-ingredient product that may be of interest if you're exploring traditional throat or digestive support, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established in our data. The main caution is if you take lithium or many oral medications—check your specific prescriptions before starting.
Discuss it with your own doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're on any regular medications.

Marshmallow Root Extract monograph & interactionsMarshmallow Root Extract by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Marshmallow Root Extract by BulkSupplements.com does interact with some medications—specifically lithium and a broad range of oral drugs.
The most serious concern is with lithium (a mood stabilizer): marshmallow's diuretic properties may reduce how your kidneys clear lithium, raising its levels in your blood and risking toxicity. If you take lithium, your dose may need adjustment.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Marshmallow also contains a sticky substance called mucilage that can interfere with how your body absorbs oral medications taken by mouth. The fix is simple: take marshmallow 30 to 60 minutes after your other pills.
Additionally, animal research suggests marshmallow flower may have mild blood-thinning effects, though the root (what's in this product) is less likely to cause this than the flower would be.
Altogether, these interactions span 2,041 individual medications. Before you start marshmallow, use the interaction checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions—especially if you're on lithium or take multiple oral drugs.

For each ingredient in Marshmallow Root Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Marshmallow Root Extract
Lithium
Theoretically, due to potential diuretic effects, marshmallow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Marshmallow is thought to have diuretic properties. To avoid lithium toxicity, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when used with marshmallow.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, marshmallow flower might have antiplatelet effects.
Animal research suggests that marshmallow flower extract has antiplatelet effects. However, the root and leaf of marshmallow, not the flower, are the plant parts most commonly found in dietary supplements. Theoretically, use of marshmallow flower with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs can have additive effects, and might increase the risk for bleeding in some patients.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, mucilage in marshmallow might impair absorption of oral drugs.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
