HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Olive Leaf 250 mg by Thompson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: lemon balm and olive. Lemon balm is an herb traditionally used for stress and mood support, while olive (in concentrated supplement form) is included for general wellness.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — gelatin, acacia, magnesium stearate, and silica — which are fillers and binders that hold the supplement together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores and stress relief, and possibly effective for depression based on the evidence we have. Olive, however, doesn't have reliable evidence behind it for any of the conditions it's been studied for — including osteoporosis, upset stomach, exercise-related infections, shingles, flu, and osteoarthritis.
The evidence just isn't established in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though long-term safety and high-dose safety aren't well studied. In trials, side effects like dizziness or sedation haven't occurred more often than placebo.
One rare case of heart rhythm changes was reported with a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but it reversed when the product was stopped. Olive as food is very safe, but concentrated supplements like this one are less studied — concentrated olive supplements should be avoided in pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise.
For breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so talk with your doctor first. Lemon balm should also be avoided in pregnancy unless your doctor says it's okay.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take CNS depressants — such as sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, or opioids — because lemon balm may add to their drowsiness effect. Also check if you're on thyroid hormone replacement, since lemon balm might interfere with how it works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with cold sores or stress if the lemon balm ingredient appeals to you, but the olive component lacks solid evidence. If you take a CNS depressant (like a sleep aid or anxiety medication) or thyroid hormone replacement, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — lemon balm can interact with both.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding aren't recommended without medical advice.

Lemon Balm
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
