Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid extract contains one active ingredient: pau d'arco extract. Pau d'arco is derived from the inner bark of a South American tree and has been used in traditional medicine, though modern evidence for its effectiveness is limited.
The extract is suspended in water, vegetable glycerin, and grain alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold for pau d'arco doesn't establish that it works for cancer, peptic ulcers, wound healing, or dysmenorrhea — the data rated for each of these is insufficient. If you're considering this supplement for any of these uses, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pau d'arco extract should be avoided during pregnancy due to possible harm to the developing baby and lack of safety data. It should also be avoided while breastfeeding because there isn't enough safety information.
At higher doses — particularly the lapachol constituent at doses above 1.5 grams daily — it may cause anemia, increased bleeding risk, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Human safety data for this product is limited, so use with caution.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — such as warfarin, apixaban, dabigatran, aspirin, or clopidogrel. Pau d'arco may increase your bleeding risk when combined with these medications.

Pau D'Arco Extract by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NOW's Pau D'Arco Extract can interact with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (medications that prevent clots).
The main concern is a moderate-severity interaction: pau d'arco may increase bleeding risk when combined with anticoagulants or antiplatelet medications. In vitro research shows it reduces platelet aggregation and may interfere with vitamin K, and one study found that lapachol (a constituent in pau d'arco) at doses above 1.5 grams daily raises bleeding risk further.

Because this product contains pau d'arco, anyone taking blood thinners like warfarin, dabigatran, or apixaban, or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin or clopidogrel, should check their exact medications with their doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement. Altogether, these interactions span 122 individual medications.
If you don't take blood thinners or antiplatelet medications, no interactions are documented in our data for the pau d'arco we could check — though this isn't a guarantee that none exist.
