Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Saccharomyces boulardii, a live beneficial yeast strain at 10 billion colony-forming units per capsule. The inactive ingredients are cellulose (the capsule), rice bran extract, and L-leucine.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: gastrointestinal health and diarrhea support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Travelers' diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection, Rotaviral diarrhea, HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea, Intestinal parasite infection — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Rotaviral diarrhea, Travelers' diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection.
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea, Constipation, Crohn disease.

The evidence we have rates S. boulardii as possibly effective for several types of diarrhea — rotaviral diarrhea, travelers' diarrhea, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea — as well as for necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious gut condition in newborns), Clostridioides difficile infection (a dangerous bacterial infection), and Helicobacter pylori (a bacteria linked to ulcers). "Possibly effective" means the research suggests a benefit, but it's not yet definitive.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

S. boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. However, the supplement should be avoided if you're critically ill or immunocompromised (have a weakened immune system), as rare but serious infections called fungemia have been reported in those groups — especially in intensive care unit patients with central catheters, feeding tubes, or on broad-spectrum antibiotics.

In a small number of people, oral use has caused mild gastrointestinal complaints like abdominal cramps, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite. Safety data are limited, so speak with your doctor before use.

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Saccharomyces Boulardii.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 40 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Antifungals (antifungal medications used for yeast or fungal infections) are a Minor concern — they may reduce how well this probiotic works because they can kill the live yeast. Check your exact antifungal medication with the search tool below before starting.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.

This probiotic may help with certain types of diarrhea if the research applies to your situation. It's generally well tolerated in healthy people, but stay away from it if you're critically ill, immunocompromised, or hospitalized on antibiotics or with central catheters.

If you take an antifungal, talk to your pharmacist first — the two work against each other.

Saccharomyces Boulardii 10 Billion by Metabolic Maintenance: Common Questions

Does Saccharomyces Boulardii 10 Billion by Metabolic Maintenance interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Saccharomyces Boulardii 10 Billion has a known interaction with 40 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Saccharomyces Boulardii 10 Billion contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm on antibiotics?
If you're on antibiotics, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first. While S. boulardii isn't listed as directly interacting with antibiotics, the safety data note that serious infections have been reported in critically ill patients on broad-spectrum antibiotics with indwelling catheters — so this isn't a casual add-on without medical input.
Will this help with my diarrhea?
It may help if your diarrhea is from antibiotics, traveler's diarrhea, rotavirus, or a C. difficile infection. The research rates it as possibly effective for these, meaning there's evidence but it's not certain. If you have diarrhea for other reasons, the data don't speak to that.
What are the side effects?
Most people tolerate it well. Rarely, it can cause mild stomach upset — abdominal cramps, gas, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. Very rarely, especially in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients, it can cause a serious yeast infection in the bloodstream.
Is this safe if I'm immunocompromised?
No — the safety data advise against it in immunocompromised patients. Because S. boulardii is a live yeast, there's a rare but serious risk of fungemia in people with weakened immune systems. Talk with your doctor about alternatives.
What is Saccharomyces boulardii?
It's a live beneficial yeast strain that may help restore healthy gut bacteria, especially after antibiotics or in certain infections. It's a probiotic, not a medicine — it works by populating your gut with organisms that may support digestion and immunity.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data on file don't cover pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or midwife before use — they can weigh the potential benefit against what we know and don't know about this supplement in those situations.
