Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: friendly probiotic yeast for digestive health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Travelers' diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection, Rotaviral diarrhea, HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Rotaviral diarrhea, Travelers' diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection.
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea, Crohn disease, Ulcerative colitis.

Saccharomyces boulardii is possibly effective for several types of diarrhea: rotaviral diarrhea, travelers' diarrhea, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The evidence also rates it possibly effective for necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious intestinal condition in premature infants), Clostridioides difficile infection (a severe intestinal infection), and Helicobacter pylori infection.

That said, "possibly effective" means the evidence is promising but not yet conclusive — talk with your doctor about whether this probiotic makes sense for your specific situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Saccharomyces boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. However, it should be avoided by people who are critically ill or immunocompromised (have a weakened immune system), because rare cases of the yeast entering the bloodstream (fungemia) have been reported in these patients, especially those in intensive care units with central lines or on broad-spectrum antibiotics.

A small number of people have reported mild gastrointestinal side effects, including abdominal cramps, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite. Safety data is limited overall, so speak with your doctor before use.

Meds to double-check

Minor interactions only
Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Saccharomyces Boulardii.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 40 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you're taking an antifungal medication (such as fluconazole, itraconazole, or similar), check it with the tool below before starting this product — antifungals may reduce how well this probiotic works. No other medication interactions are documented in our data.

Essential-Biotic Saccharomyces Boulardii 3 Billion CFUs by Allergy Research Group: Common Questions

Does Essential-Biotic Saccharomyces Boulardii 3 Billion CFUs by Allergy Research Group interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Essential-Biotic Saccharomyces Boulardii 3 Billion CFUs has a known interaction with 40 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Essential-Biotic Saccharomyces Boulardii 3 Billion CFUs contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm on antibiotics?
Saccharomyces boulardii is actually used to help prevent diarrhea caused by antibiotics, so it's a common reason to take it. However, if you're critically ill or in an ICU, talk with your doctor first because the safety data in critically ill patients is limited.
Is this safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
We don't have enough reliable safety data for pregnancy and lactation. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before use if you're pregnant or nursing.
What does 3 billion CFUs mean?
CFUs stand for colony-forming units — a measure of how many live organisms are in each capsule. Three billion means there are 3 billion active yeast cells per dose.
Can I open the capsule and mix it with food?
Our data notes that opening capsules has been associated with a higher risk of the yeast entering the bloodstream in critically ill patients. If you need to open a capsule, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
Will this help my IBS or general digestion?
Our data shows Saccharomyces boulardii is possibly effective for specific types of diarrhea — rotaviral, traveler's, and antibiotic-associated — as well as certain serious intestinal infections. Evidence for broader digestive complaints or IBS isn't on file here, so ask your doctor if it might help your situation.
