1,3-dmaa and Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine

Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA is thought to have stimulant effects. There is concern that taking 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some preliminary research shows that taking 1,3-DMAA 50 mg daily in combination with caffeine 250 mg daily does not increase respiratory rate, blood pressure, or other cardiovascular outcomes compared to taking caffeine alone in healthy men. However, a number of cardiovascular side effects have been reported for patients taking 1,3-DMAA in combination with other stimulants including caffeine. Theoretically, combining 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some stimulant drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, diethylpropion (Tenuate), methylphenidate, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others), and many others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about pairing DMAA with a product like Actifed: the pseudoephedrine part is itself a stimulant decongestant. It revs up your sympathetic nervous system, the same 'fight or flight' system that DMAA pushes on. So you've got two stimulants stacking on top of each other, both nudging your heart rate up and tightening your blood vessels.

On their own, each can already cause a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, and higher blood pressure. Put them together and those effects could add up. This warning is mostly theoretical, based on how these drugs work rather than hard studies, but DMAA has a genuinely bad safety record. Honestly, DMAA is banned and best avoided altogether. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing it with any decongestant.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine page

“Ephedra is the interaction I would rule out first for anyone taking pseudoephedrine with triprolidine (Actifed, Triposed). Stacking a second stimulant on a decongestant that already raises blood pressure and heart rate invites real cardiovascular trouble, and that logic runs through most of this list, which deserves genuine care rather…”
