Why this applies to Alprazolam

Alprazolam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Aegeline interacts with.

Aegeline inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, aegeline may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use aegeline cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down alprazolam (Xanax). In test-tube studies, aegeline appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, your alprazolam could clear out more slowly and build up a bit, which might add to its usual effects like drowsiness, dizziness, slowed thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. So far this has only been seen in lab studies, not in actual patients, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Honestly, the bigger issue is aegeline itself, since it's been tied to serious liver injury and regulators have warned against it. I'd steer clear of it and check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Aegeline is a compound originally identified in the bael tree (Aegle marmelos) that gained attention because it was added to some weight-loss and workout supplements. It is best known for being linked to serious liver injury in a product called OxyELITE Pro, and U.S. regulators warned against products containing it. There is no good evidence it safely helps with weight loss, and it should generally be avoided.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
