Progestin, Oral Contraceptive falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Aegeline interacts with.

Aegeline inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, aegeline may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use aegeline cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Your drospirenone pill (Slynd) gets cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, aegeline appears to slow that enzyme down. In plain terms, if that happened in your body, the hormone might break down a little slower and build up slightly, which could mean more of the typical progestin side effects like spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, or nausea. It would not make your birth control fail.

Here is the honest part: this is only test-tube evidence and has never been shown in real people, so it is theoretical and rated minor. Honestly, my bigger concern is aegeline itself, since it has been linked to serious liver injury and regulators warned against it. I would skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

  • Progestin-only (drospirenone) oral contraceptives are used to prevent pregnancy. Progestin is a female hormone. It works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation) and changing the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. Progestin-only oral contraceptives are a very effective method of birth control, but they do not prevent the spread of of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]) and other sexually transmitted diseases.
