Here's the concern with pairing alfalfa and Ibrance (palbociclib). Alfalfa contains compounds that may gently rev up the immune system. Palbociclib is a targeted cancer drug that, among other things, lowers your white blood cell counts as part of how your body responds to treatment. The worry, in theory, is that an immune-stimulating supplement could work against the way these medicines are meant to act.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on lab studies and a few case reports, not strong human proof with palbociclib specifically. Still, when you're being treated for breast cancer, I'd play it safe. Please run any alfalfa supplement by your oncologist or pharmacist before starting it, since they're watching your blood counts and treatment closely.

About Palbociclib

What Is Palbociclib Used For?

Brand name: Ibrance

Palbociclib (brand name Ibrance) is used to treat adults with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It is always given in combination with other medicines — either an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, or with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on prior hormonal therapy. It is also used with inavolisib and fulvestrant for a specific subtype (PIK3CA-mutated, endocrine-resistant) of this cancer confirmed by an FDA-authorized test.

Ibrance is also approved in combination with trastuzumab (with or without pertuzumab) and endocrine therapy for maintenance treatment of adults with HR-positive, HER2-positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, following initial induction treatment.
