PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
Why this applies to Risperidone
Risperidone falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Alfalfa interacts with.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for risperidone and alfalfa: this isn't about how your body breaks down the medication or how strong its effects are. Risperidone is on a list of drugs that can make your skin a bit more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn more easily. Alfalfa, in large supplement doses, contains chlorophyll that might do the same thing, so the worry is simply that the two together could add up and leave your skin extra sun-sensitive.
Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on animal research, and we don't know if it really matters in people. The simple, smart move is to wear sunscreen and a hat when you're outside. If you're thinking about alfalfa supplements, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
