ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Baclofen
Baclofen falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with baclofen and algin (the seaweed-based fiber found in some heartburn products). Because algin swells into a thick gel in your stomach, there's a theoretical chance it could trap a bit of your baclofen and slow or reduce how much your body soaks up. If less baclofen gets absorbed, you might notice your muscle spasms or stiffness aren't quite as well controlled. Baclofen is not a prodrug, so this is about absorption, not activation.
The good news: this concern comes only from lab-based, theoretical reasoning, and it's rated minor. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your baclofen first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the algin. If you're unsure, check with your pharmacist.

About Algin
What is Algin?
- Heartburn and acid reflux (in combination products)
- Lowering cholesterol
- Digestive health and feeling full
- Use as a thickener and binder in foods and medicines
- Weight management
Algin (alginate) is a fiber-like substance from brown seaweed that is widely used as a thickener, gel, and binder in foods and medicines. Its best-known medical use is in heartburn products, where it forms a barrier that helps reduce acid reflux; evidence for other uses like lowering cholesterol or weight loss is weaker. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but check with your pharmacist before using it as a supplement, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Baclofen
What Is Baclofen Used For?
Brand names: Lioresal, Ozobax, Lyvispah, Fleqsuvy
Baclofen treats spasticity, which means stiff, tight muscles with spasms. Oral baclofen (tablets, Baclofen oral solution, Ozobax, Baclofen oral suspension, Fleqsuvy, Lyvispah) is used for spasticity from multiple sclerosis, especially flexor spasms with pain, clonus (rhythmic jerking) and muscle rigidity. It may also help some people with spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases.
Intrathecal baclofen (Gablofen, Lioresal Intrathecal and other baclofen injections) is used for severe spasticity. It is given into the fluid around the spinal cord, usually through an implanted pump. It is not for skeletal muscle spasm from rheumatic disorders, and baclofen tablets are not recommended for stroke, cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease.
