Dextromethorphan falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is basically a soluble seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. Because of that gel, there's a theoretical chance it could grab onto your dextromethorphan dose and slow how much of it gets absorbed. If that happened, you might notice your cough syrup just doesn't quiet your cough as well as usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This concern comes from lab work on how algin affects absorption, not from real cases with dextromethorphan, and it's rated as a minor interaction. To stay on the safe side, an easy fix is to take your cough medicine first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before taking algin. If you're unsure how to space them, your pharmacist can help you sort it out.

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
