American hellebore, also known as Veratrum viride, contains alkaloids that can potentially prolong the QT interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG). This effect is similar to that of certain medications known as QT-prolonging drugs, which can increase the risk of a serious heart rhythm disorder called torsades de pointes (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4728534/). Combining American hellebore with other drugs that cause QT-prolongation can increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the concern with pairing American Hellebore and your imatinib (Gleevec). Both can stretch out a part of your heart's electrical cycle called the QT interval. When that interval gets too long, it can occasionally trigger a dangerous, fast heart rhythm called torsades de pointes, which may cause fainting, palpitations, or worse. This isn't about one changing the other's blood levels. It's that stacking two QT-stretching agents adds up the risk.

On top of that, American Hellebore is genuinely poisonous and can crash your heart rate and blood pressure on its own. The evidence here is moderate, but given both effects, I'd steer clear of this supplement. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before using anything containing it.

What Is Imatinib Used For?

Brand name: Gleevec

Imatinib treats a range of blood cancers and solid tumors. It is used for Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in adults and children — whether newly diagnosed or in more advanced phases — and for Philadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) in both adults and pediatric patients.

It is also used for Kit-positive gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), including after surgical removal, and for several rarer conditions: myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative diseases (MDS/MPD) linked to specific gene changes, aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM), hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) and/or chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL), and unresectable, recurrent, or metastatic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP).
