Here's the gist with andiroba and your Felbamate. Andiroba contains certain fatty acid compounds that, in animal and lab studies, seemed to gently calm brain activity by acting on the same GABA pathways some seizure medicines use. The thought is that pairing it with Felbamate could, in theory, add to its calming effects and bump up side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, or feeling foggy.

I'll be honest though, this is very much a theoretical concern. It comes from animal research, not from people, and the chance of it actually causing problems is considered low. Andiroba is also used mostly on the skin, not swallowed. Still, since Felbamate is a serious seizure medicine, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before adding andiroba so nothing sneaks up on you.

Andiroba is an oil pressed from the seeds of an Amazonian tree, used mainly on the skin for inflammation, minor wounds, aches, and as an insect repellent. Most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, so its benefits in people are not well proven. It is most often used topically; avoid internal use and use during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety has not been established.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
