Here's the gist with diazepam (Valium) and andiroba. Diazepam calms the brain by boosting a signal called GABA. Lab and animal work suggests some compounds in andiroba may nudge those same GABA-A receptors. So in theory, taking the two together could add up and make diazepam's calming effects stronger, meaning more drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, or trouble concentrating.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This is a theoretical concern from animal studies, rated minor and unlikely, with no proof it happens in people. Andiroba is also used mostly on the skin, not swallowed. Still, since both touch the same brain pathway, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you'd be using andiroba internally.

Andiroba is an oil pressed from the seeds of an Amazonian tree, used mainly on the skin for inflammation, minor wounds, aches, and as an insect repellent. Most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, so its benefits in people are not well proven. It is most often used topically; avoid internal use and use during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety has not been established.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
